First, I want to give props to the current Bearcat football team. I understand they lost to a very good Gunter team tonight, but by all accounts, they are headed in the right direction. They are 3-1 on the season now and that is a solid start. I get the feeling that old school hard-nosed Bearcat football is on its way back. Even though I haven’t lived there in over 20 years I still take pride in Bearcat football and love to see them do well.

It was homecoming week for my squad 25 years ago this week. Homecoming provides a lot of distractions to a football team. There is a dance, a parade, reunions, people coming into town, mums, and on and on and on. You never want to lose a homecoming game even with all the distractions. There is some added pressure on the players from that standpoint.

We played Blooming Grove on Homecoming. We had beat them 47-13 the year prior.I remember the bus ride seemed like it took 4 hours to get to Blooming Grove from Pilot Point, so I was glad to play them at home my Senior year. As with any game you can typically point to one or two players as the Players of the Game. Well our team had a bunch of guys capable of being Players of the Game on any given week.  The week prior against Nolan Catholic I would say Brian Chambers was likely the hero. I remember he caught a key middle screen pass late in the game and then run in the final touchdown with less than 30 seconds remaining.

Homecoming game I would say belonged to Carl Boston “C.B.” Standridge. Steve Custy blocked a punt. Michael French recovered the blocked punt for a touchdown. Lloyd Dean Childers had a bunch of rushing yards. But C.B.Standridge took home the title of Homecoming King as well as having two interceptions in the game. We cruised to a 27-0 victory to remain undefeated on the season.
If you spent much time in Pilot Point from 1991-1994 you likely remember a floppy blonde haired “beach boy” looking kid driving a Mustang all around town. That was Carl Boston “C.B.” Standridge. We had some great times back then. Whether it was running to Taco Bueno in Denton, causing mischief at the Beta Club Convention, cruising the square in PP, or just hanging out at the lake riding jet skis and such. C.B. could be a bit of a wild child, but I’m proud of the family man he has become in the last 15 years or so.

Next up for our team was against the Bishop Dunne Falcons in Dallas.
Go Bearcats!
