Across The Field With The Bridgeport Bulls

The Bridgeport Bulls snapped a two-year playoff drought last season and will try to build on that success when they host Pilot Point Friday.
Bridgeport lost its first five games in 2017, but picked up two key district victories over Krum and Vernon to secure a spot in the postseason.
The Bulls are led on offense by speedy junior quarterback Jadon Maddux, who was the 4A bronze medalist in the 100.
Maddux was a first-team all-district selection and the Wise County Co-Offensive Newcomer of the Year last season, throwing for 2,142 yards and 16 touchdowns. On the ground, Maddux ran for 864 yards and 13 scores.
Christian Hand returns at running back after recovering from a leg injury that forced him to miss the latter half of last season.
Hand will be a big part of the Bulls' defense at linebacker. The Bulls return second-team all-district defensive linemen Gonsalo Ibarra and Diangelo Sandoval. Carson Johnson will be at one linebacker with Hand. Ty Read leads the secondary.
The Bulls lost in the bi-district round to Godley.

This Week For The Bearcats

August 27, 2018

XC Coaches Corner "Energized"

This past Saturday the Pilot Point Bearcats Cross Country teams competed in Greenhill/Luke’s Locker 6-Mile Relay at Norbuck Park.  The relay featured eight different races in four categories with hay bale obstacles along the course.  This event has remained one of the longest running cross country events in Texas.  We’ve competed in this race many times and it’s a team favorite.
Varsity girls competed in 4A and under division and placed 6th out of approximately 30 teams. I warned them (not too early) there would be hay bales single and double stacked along the course.  I didn’t’ want them to focus more on getting over the bales than on the running.  Veteran runners usually joke that every year we have a new runner that runs through the bales instead of jumping over them.  Luckily, to my knowledge, that did not happen.    However, I did not press the issue.  The girls did a fantastic job at the meet and dropped a significant amount of time in their splits.  This is an exciting team to watch and it is not going unnoticed by other competitive teams.
The varsity boys competed in the same division and placed 4th out of 33 teams.  The veterans love to come to the meet because they like to test themselves against some of the bigger programs in the state.    Most of the boys dropped time and are continuing to push each other to become better each week.   I know the competitive spirit that drives them and see a more focused team at our practices. I was really glad to see some of the glimmer and excitement in their eyes when we competed Saturday.  It must've been that we were back in our routine that I spoke of last week!
I know these athletes will continue to run faster and smarter.  Positive energy, hard work, smart running, and sincere excitement are just what we needed this week to energize us for the weeks to come. I would say it was a successful week for the Bearcat Cross Country teams!  We look forward to competing at the Marcus Invitational at North Lakes Park in Denton Saturday, Sept 1st.
Go Bearcats!

This Week For The Bearcats

XC Coaches Corner "Routine"

Anyone who knows me knows I am a routine guy. I like to be very early to every meet and I am always on the clock.  Well...our first meet was anything but routine.  First of all, it was a hot and sultry Thursday afternoon (we usually run on Saturday).  We loaded the bus and headed to Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie for the first meet of the season.  Most of the competition would be 5A and 6A teams, but it was important to me to get our new runners on this course because it is the site of our Regional Meet.  So, all varsity and jv runners loaded up and we took off to our first competition.  As we approached Interstate 35...how should I say this, things got heated.  The air conditioner decided to call it quits.  Then, miles down the road we hit standstill traffic. So after a two hour steamy bus ride with nerves shot and dehydration quickly settling in...we jumped off the bus at Lynn Creek looking as if we actually ran from Pilot Point.  To my surprise, a change in start times occurred and the varsity teams needed to run first.  So much for a smooth and routine start to the season.  In the end, the varsity boys finished 6th, JV boys finished 2nd and the varsity girls finished 4th against some salty competition.
Expectations are extremely high for the Bearcat Cross Country teams as well they should be.  Compared to most teams in the state we look very competitive.  However, ask the Bearcat runners and they will tell you that we have room for improvement and I have no doubt they will continue to work hard.  I am confident in their abilities and their drive and I’m confident they will be successful.  Hopefully, we WILL be back to our ROUTINE of running early Saturday morning, at Norbuck Park for the Greenhill 6 mile relay.  Go Bearcats!
DECIDE. COMMIT.  SUCCEED.  11.3.18

#TBT to Juanda Berend Keith's memories of August 11, 1964

“Jasper Stanley was the best band director we had during my junior high and high school years. We learned a great deal under his leadership regarding music and music theory. The Pilot Point Gee High School Band was small in those days; consequently, band members began marching with the high school band during their 7th grade year.  Band members were allowed to try out to be a twirler when they were entering high school. With anticipation and excitement, Janet Davis, Diana Bobo and I tried out and were successful. There was a lot of competition, so to be chosen was truly an honor. Mr. Stanley was serious about the band performing well and sounding good, so unless the twirlers were being featured, they would play their instruments in the football stands during the game and perform with their instruments during halftime. Although our hairstyles may cause you to chuckle, we were totally in style! Remember, it was 1964! These were definitely fun and interesting days in our small town lives.”
